8,500 km highway projects by the end of 2014
India is going to witness better roads by the end of 2014 as the Road transport and highways department has resolved to award 8,500 km of roadways projects out of which 3,900 km should be completed before the year end. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be discussing this issue with the key infrastructure secretaries in a few days and expects them to present a plan and budget for the same.
Out of the 8500 km of the highway projects, about 3500 km will be built using public-private partnerships (PPP). The highways wing has submitted a list of nearly a dozen projects which can start immediately including two expressway projects – Delhi-Meerut and Eastern Peripheral. A better road network will give a boost to the transportation of agricultural products and industrial finished goods. If these projects are awarded quickly, and the government gives sufficient aids to the developers, then they can be finished in record time improving the road network in the country.
There are many new townships planned along the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, which need to be connected using this road network. 50 minor ports and 24 airports need better connectivity and the nation is looking forward to the completion of these projects for an improved road infrastructure like the developed nations.
