Residents are surprised with project Parking lots under playground
The idea to have underground parking lots beneath playgrounds was mooted some months ago in view of the acute paucity of land for parking spaces. The BBMP is going ahead with parking slots under some playgrounds but there has been no public notice on this hotly-debated project, which was once declared “shelved”. Malleswaram residents say they are surprised by happenings in their locality. The residents voiced their concern about ‘unknown’ works in progress at the playground adjacent to the Sirur park on 15th Cross.
BBMP is working on an underground multi-level parking lot under playground.Ironically, the residents were informed about the project by the Save Bangalore committee and not the BBMP. The lack of information about this project has confused and agitated residents.
The plan would as much surprise residents of Shantinagar, Hombegowda area, Jayanagar fifth block, in and around Netkallappa circle and Kanteerava stadium. 5 out of the 10 locations identified for the project were playgrounds. These included Akkithimmanahalli playground adjacent to Hockey stadium in Shanthi Nagar, Hombegowda playground on Hosur Road, Malleswaram playground, Telephone exchange playground in Jayanagar 5th block, Kanteerava stadium in front of Mallya hospital and near Netkallappa circle.
The BBMP commissioner promised residents that there will be no inconvenience caused to users of the playground. It will be open to public after construction of the parking lot. The biggest challenge ahead for BBMP is increasing the playground numbers.Given a choice between parks and playgrounds, all people want a park than a playground.
