The BBMP will levy the proposed Garbage Cess or Solid Waste Management (SWM) Cess from April 1. The cess will be levied on residential and non-residential units based on the dimensions of the land on which they stand. The annual cess will be levied on property tax. It has to be paid within the first 50 days of the financial year.

“While the cess will be collected along with the property tax for residential units, commercial units will have to pay it while renewing the trade licence every year,” said Siddaiah. Citing the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act of 1976, Siddaiah said  its Section 103 (B) laid down that SWM cess levied by corporations cannot exceed Rs 1,000 a month.
