Chennai to privatise street light maintenance
In a move to improve the street lighting in the city, the Chennai Corporation is planning to privatise maintenance operations.
The civic body is to call short-term tenders for repairing and maintenance of streetlights. After complains from residents, the civic body will immediately replace defunct tube lights or mercury vapor lamps or other electrical equipment.
The corporation also ensured that lamps are tested and of good quality. The full city is illuminated with 2.2 lakh streetlights and the corporation succeeded to bring down the percentage of not-burning streetlights in the eight added zones to around 5 per cent.
After one-fifth of the complaints by the residents in a day, with the help of toll-free helpline 1913 and 15 zonal offices pertain to such ‘not-burning’ streetlights, the action is been taken seriously and privatisation of maintenance was finalised.
