Delhi’s first monorail project work begins
To bring in relief to the commuters, the bylanes of east Delhi will soon be replaced by monorail that will connect the most congested areas and will be linked with the metro stations, liberating the commuters from heavy traffic.
A detailed project report of the 11 km alignment of the monorail has been prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. This will start from Shastri Park to Trilokpuri to the Delhi government. The transport minister said that the plan might get sanctioned by the government within three months and the monorail construction will start soon and is expected to be completed in 2017. The route of the monorail will go though Geeta Colony, Gandhi Nagar, Kailash Colony, Jheel Khurenja, Khureji Khas, Pandav Nagar and other neighbouring localities.
The alignment of the monorail will be elevated, along roads that are narrow. The elevated corridor will be minimum height of 5.5m clearance from the road. due to the high density of crowd in those particular area, the pillars will be build narrow that is 1.5-1.8m, this will help the monorail to take sharp turns.
According to some metro officials, the advantage of the monorail, in populated areas, is the narrower pillar diameter compared to the metro. The monorail pillar measures only 1-1.2m while the diameter for a metro pillar is 1.5-1.8m. Another advantage of a monorail is its ability to take sharp turns.
The total project (excluding land price) will cost the government around Rs 2,235 crore and the fare structure will start from Rs 2.5 per km, which is same as Delhi Metro.
This monorail will have 12 station for now : Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patparganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri. This will also connect three Delhi Metro lines – at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri – thereby providing connectivity with the existing Dilshad Garden-Rithala line, Anand Vihar-Dwarka and the proposed Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar under phase III of the metro network. the monorail can take up 1.5 lakh passengers a day initially.
