Traffic chaos ahead Kochi Metro work

1 Comment Sub Category:Cities,Construction,Infrastructure,Kochi,Realty News Posted On: Jan 30, 2013

Kochi metroKochi- The city is already facing traffic problem and the work of relaying side roads have still not initiated by the Kochi Corporation before the construction work of Kochi metro starts at its desired time.

Relaying of side roads is specially important on the stretch between Edappally and Kaloor because once the metro is initiated at this sector then the traffic will have to be averted from the old highway linking Edappally, Mamangalam, Palarivattom and Kaloor.

At one side, the Corporation has not even thought of making any plans to divert vehicles via interior roads of the Kochi city. And on the other side, councillors told that side roads in current state would not be able to take heavy traffic movement.

When the construction work of Kochi metro will begin, the traffic on the stretch between Edappally and Kaloor will be diverted via various interior roads to reach Pachalam and then to Chittoor Road. These interior roads are Devankulangara Junction (near Changampuzha Park), Edappally Raghavan Pillai Road, BTS Road, Karukapally Junction, Keerthi Nagar Junction, Little Flower Church Road (Perandoor Road), Pottakuzhi Road, P J Antony Road, and Irrittakulangara Road.

There are also same kind of side roads to Mamangalam Junction, North Janatha Junction, Deshabhimani Junction, Mathrubhoomi and Kaloor- Elamakkara Road which are almost in bad condition.

Presently, the Kochi corporation is implementing 20mm carpet chipping method for relaying roads. This method have two shortcomings, first such roads are just for three months and second, it does not have the guarantee of the contractor to boot. The former KMRL chairman also agreed the same when 10 city roads were laid to dismount North Railway Overbridge ( ROB)

He told that side roads which serve as links roads such as BTS Road, Housing Board Colony (HBC) Road, Eroor Vasudev Road, Pottakuzhy-Karukapilly Road should be completely laid.

People suggested the corporation authorities to relay roads using the bitumen macadam and bitumen concrete (BM&BC) method which will assure long life of roads along with guarantee. Such roads can withstand heavy traffic also. This method is followed by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL).
