Residents oppose plastic recycling unit

No Comments Sub Category:Civic Issues,Other cities Posted On: Feb 14, 2013

residentsKozhikode- Residents from the West Hill Industrial Estate have opposed the city corporation against the commissioning of the newly launched plastic recycling unit at the estate. They insist that the unit will not function until the piled up waste from the compound is cleared.

Apart from just opposing, the residents have planned to hold protests if the authorities refuse to address their issue. According to the residents, they are not against the commissioning of the plastic recycling unit but  against civic body’s reluctance to eliminate 1,500 loads of plastic waste and industrial waste which is spread across the land.

A few months ago the plastic recycling unit ran on a trail and showed that it is capable of recycling one tonne of plastic waste per day. Further, the generated plastic waste will be converted to pellets and granules. The delay in the commissioning of the plastic waste recycling unit has been due to the opposing and the stiff resistance from the people in that area.

According to a resident, the plastic waste which is piled up at the industrial area cannot be recycled. Also the civic body had given the contract to four contractors for cleaning up the pile, but they instead just picked up the good plastic which was possible to use.

The civic body is trying to convert the area as another dumping site even without clearing the piled up waste which  cannot be re-used.

The residents also stated that they will not allow the civic body to commission the recycling plant before clearing the dump waste. In fact they have decided to dump the piled up plastic in front of the corporation office if the authorities fail to address their grievances. They are awaiting authorities’ response.

The Councillor of the area had already informed the authorities about people’s apprehensions to the civic body. He has also requested the Mayor to convene an all-party gathering in order to resolve the issue before the recycling plant starts functioning. However, they have not yet received any positive response.

As per the corporation officials, the civic bodies  have already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the proprietor of the plastic recycling unit after its trial.

A whooping sum of Rs. 26,000 will be paid by the agency operating the recycling unit every month to the civic body for running the unit. The machinery was installed by a Kozhikode-based firm, Ram Biological, with Rs. 12 lakh. The plastic will be collected from house holds and will be dumped in more than five locations by the Kudumbasree workers. Further, the waste will be collected from these points by the recycling staff.

A corporation official stated that  the civic body has already entrusted a contractor to clean up the piled waste.
