Property taxBBMP has started with the drive to recover the pending tax amount from the tax defaulters.

The civic body has decided to flash the name and photographs of the tax defaulters on hoarding at major traffic intersections.

In addition to this, Palike is planning to embarrass defaulters by beating drums in front of the defaulters’ properties. It has been revealed that over four lakh property owners owe BBMP Rs 750 crore towards property tax dues since 2008-09.

BBMP commissioner said that the tax collection has to be made strict by naming and shaming the property tax defaulters. A deadline of March 31 has been set for the defaulters by BBMP officials to collect the dues by using GIS mapping which has all the details of all the 16.5 lakh properties that comes under BBMP limits.

High-value property tax defaulters are now under the BBMP scanner. BBMP’s revenue inspectors along with members of the tax and finance department inspected two tech parks and a well-known mall near Whitefield and they recovered a huge unpaid tax amount of Rs 6 crores on the spot. This time the civic body directly entered the malls and tech parks without serving any notice to them.

According to sources, the builder and owner of the mall showed the built-up area as vacant land. According to records in possession with BBMP, the mall owner had not declared tax for a whopping 1.5 lakh sq ft of property and showed the same as vacant land paying merely 12 paise per sq ft.

Pallike officials said that some of the shops inside the malls have not even obtained occupancy certificate from BBMP and this amounts to illegal occupancy.
