BBMP to collect Rs 750 crores as property tax
BBMP is going to start a drive to recover the the pending tax amount from the tax defaulters. The civic body has decided to flash the name and photographs of the tax defaulters on hoarding at major traffic intersections. So if you are a property tax defaulter, beware!
In addition to this, Palike is planning to embarrass defaulters by beating drums in front of the defaulters’ properties. It has been revealed that over four lakh property owners owe BBMP Rs 750 crore towards property tax dues since 2008-09.
BBMP commissioner said that the tax collection has to be made strict by naming and shaming the property tax defaulters. A deadline of March 31 has been set for the defaulters by BBMP officials to collect the dues by using GIS mapping which has all the details of all the 16.5 lakh properties that comes under BBMP limits.
The civic body is planning to publish a ward-wise list of property tax defaulters in the media. If the officials fail to collect the pending amount then strict action will be taken against the concerned officials.
In a meeting, Commissioner said there were 13.34 lakh properties registered, of which 9.44 lakh owners have paid their tax.
BBMP revenue officials will review buildings with over 10,000 sq ft built-up area to check whether the property tax paid is on par with the extent of property. This process will help the officials to find out property owners who have undervalued the property while paying tax, the BBMP commissioner said. Besides, the BBMP will be taking RWAs’ assistance in recovering the dues from defaulters, the BBMP release said.
