mumbaiMumbai-  Now Mumbaikars will have to pay the congestion charges for driving in SoBo areas and the western suburbs as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has proposed a rule to the state. However, its is expected that state will approve this proposal.

Apart from this, the residents in Mumbai city will also have to pay the development charges in the form of taxes which are imposed against the appreciation of their properties and businesses based on the upcoming  infrastructure projects like the metros, monorails and the sea links.

According to an MMRDA commissioner, the city should follow patterns like that of Singapore as affording a car in Singapore is very expensive, besides people there are imposed with road taxes and congestion fees. This will help in the limitation of the elevated roads in a major city like Mumbai. It’s time the citizens in Mumbai start thinking like that of Singaporeans considering the heavy congestion tax and heavy taxation on vehicle buying.

He said that it is quite difficult for vehicles to move on SV Road and stressed on the idea of the property tax collection by the MMRDA or a 10 percent development charge in Bandra-Kurla Complex and other city centres like Oshiwara, Wadala and others which is the planning and the development authority.

It was told that the city also needs a wide area for parking facility and the authorities should not be hesitant to collect the betterment charges from residents living near the project areas, as this will offer them development and heavy appreciation for property prices and business perspective view. This official is known to serve the MMRDA for two years and will be retiring in some days.

Also the officials stated that the second metro line should have been designed underground and should have been extended up to Dahisar. It is believed that they have also identified the land for the car depot at Dahisar and the official  had made recommendations in favor of the underground metro on this corridor despite it being a costlier project.
