sewage treatment plantChennai- The city will not face sewage outflow onto the street as the Chennai Metro Water is planning to use a new technology to minimize sewage outflow.

It is a Rs 3.60 crore project which is being implemented in comply with the orders of Municipal Administration and Water Supply Minister. In this technology, the officials will install ultrasonic level detectors in sewage collection wells which will collect the waste and automatically pump sewage from one location to another.

The level detectors will be installed in 218 pumping stations (integral part of a sewage network) across the Chennai city. The implementation of this technology will result in efficiency and improved monitoring of sewage pumping stations.

So far, the pumping stations had been operated manually but now, the complete process will be controlled automatically via this technology. Firstly, the height of waste would be determined by the level detector which will send a signal to the controlling system. After receiving signal, the controlling system will start and stop large pumps. This will empty the well and would transfer the waste into sewage treatment plant.

The Metro Water is also planning to introduce automated inline water quality monitoring system which will continuously monitor the quality of water supplied to residents. In this regard, the officials are collecting water samples manually every day from water distribution stations.

The devices would be attached to pipelines and will check the quality of water in each hour. The central control room will receive the transmitted signals from the sensors of devices. The estimated cost of this project would be around Rs 1.80 crore. The monitoring devices will be installed at 50 spots across the city.
