Around 15 lakh people of southern Chennai and the expanded areas like Velachery, Thiruvanmiyur, Pallipattu and areas adjoining the IT Corridor such as Karapakkam are now being supplied with the desalinated water. Earlier, these localities were getting water supply from Pallipattu distribution station.

The Rs 871.24-crore Nemelli plant was inaugurated on February, 2013. It is the second desalination plant of city which is set up in Nemmeli along East Coast Road. It is constructed by V A Tech Wabag Ltd in association with Israel-based IDE Technologies.

The plant was to be opened last year but it got delayed due to more time required for sinking pipelines to draw raw water and release brine. This plant at Nemmeli is owned by Chennai Metrowater.

Similar kind of plant is situated in Minjur, Chennai. It is being operated by Chennai Water Desalination Limited on DBOOT (design, build, own, operate, transfer) mode.

In areas like Indira Nagar, Beasant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur and PTC Colony, the water supply was defective. Now the desalinated water is also supplied to these areas . The newly added areas of the Chennai Corporation also receives drinking water from the desalination plant.

These areas include AGS Colony, Swaminathan Nagar, Vaidegi Nagar and Caronat Ground in the Kottivakkam division, Subburaya Nagar, Kasturibai Nagar and Mahatma Gandhi Nagar in the Thoraipakkam division, Kumaran Nagar, Anna Street and Gangaiamman Koil Street in Sholinganallur and Senthil Nagar, Manikodi Srinivasan Nagar in the Perungudi division.
