The civic body will draw water from Narmada canal at Sherkhi and supply it to the western parts of the city. The project was taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The water from the canal will be filtered at Khanpur before supplying it through the Gotri and Harinagar water tanks in the western parts of the city. The pipelines for the network have already been laid while work is being conducted on the filtration plant. The water treatment plant has a capacity of 75 million liter per day (MLD). The project involved is in three parts. These include construction of intake facility near Sherkhi canal of Narmada project from which water will be drawn, construction of treatment plant, pump house and sump at Khanpur as well as laying of pipelines for drawing water from canal to the treatment plant, from there to Gotri water tank and Harinagar water tank.
The latest Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) project that has been consistently failing all deadlines is that of supplying water from Narmada canal at Sherkhi to the city. Standing committee chairman Shabdasharan Brahmbhatt reported saying, the project was delayed due to several reasons like severe shortage of cement. “Work had almost come to a standstill due to this. Work slackened at a phase when it could have been conducted briskly. Later, the monsoon affected work. We hope to complete it soon.”
