The newly formed Telangana Government has announced its plans of constructing the world’s biggest building near the Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad. The project is still in its planning phase and has been proposed in view of creating a better image of the city skyline which the CM believes is important for urban areas.

Reports from the Chief Minister’s office has revealed that the government plans to construct a skyscraper in the Sanjeevah Park that is located near the Hussain Sagar Lake.  K. Chandrasekhar Rao had previously made an announcement of planning to add skyscrapers to the skyline of Hyderabad which he believes would improve the image and appearance of the city.

Project Plans:

  • Different viable places for construction of the building are in search so that the building work can be allocated.
  • Waters of the Hussain Sagar Lake have been directed to be drained to the nearby canals during the summer season which is necessary for the proposed plan which is to incorporate a freshwater body in the building area.
  • Once the building site has been decided upon, land particulars and related information must be procured to test the sites for the building of the proposed 60-110 structures in the area.
  • Release of polluted water into the nearby canals of the area will also be banned soon.

Skyscrapers, Rao believes are essential to building an image of a developing urban city life and he cited examples of cities like Singapore and Dubai which have skyscrapers defining the city skyline.

Criticisms Regarding CM’s Plan: There have been several oppositions and opinions voiced against the proposal of the CM. Reasons such as lack of basic amenities and the  Court rule banning pucca constructions around the Lake have been cited.

Floor leader of the BJP Party, K. Laxman is reported to have stated that the government should first focus on providing civic amenities and pay attention to addressing civic issues before dreaming of making such structures in the city. Many complaints have been reported of people being swept away by the flood during monsoons or falling into open drains. There is an urgent need for the government to focus on matters pertaining to these sectors.
