Residents of Hyderabad faces Water Woes

No Comments Sub Category:Community,Health,Municipality Posted On: Oct 12, 2011

Residents in Hyderabad are facing acute water problems, with figures suggesting almost 70 percent of the pipelines providing drinking water are in need for immediate restoration and inability to do so would lead to various health hazards. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is well aware of the situation, however is helpless due to inadequate funds. In studies conducted by the  HMWS&SB through private consultants it was estimated that the overhaul of the 934 km long pipeline would cost around Rs.1,152 crore. The water board has requested the state government to fund Rs.75 crore as a special package for completion of the identified works immediately.

The government has already sanctioned Rs.10 crores however the government has turned a deaf ear to the requests of releasing the fund for Rs. 65 crores more. The study involved examination of various norms like pipe material, risks involved, conditions of the pipelines before recommending for the water board to replace the pipelines within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. The areas which are in dire need for replacement has been identified by the Institute Of Preventive Medicine, Institute of Health Systems and the Quality Assurance Wing of the HMWS&SB. Impure water has already been diagnosed as one of the main reason behind many medical cases in Hyderabad. Residents of Hyderabad are still hoping for the betterment of the water supply.
