A new SEZ in the making by Ennore Port
Kamarajar Port Ltd has it’s eyes on setting up one of the best and state of the art special economic zones across surplus land available in its kitty, says MA Bhaskarachar, Chairman and Managing Director, Kamarajar Port.
In Chennai, the port is known to be a major one along with the famous Chennai port and a private port located at Kattupalli near Ennore. The main aim of the zone upcoming is to bring down port user charges and help be more competitive ahead. In the past the port had brought own its rates, and has had plenty of volume and cargo handled too. The benefits of the same were passed on to the economies around, say sources.
Reports show that around 27 million tonnes of cargo was handled by the port last fiscal, which is fifty percent more than what it, did in the fiscal before that. At the moment more can be handled, since complete dredging and deepening of the channel has been done, 20 meters to be precise on the channel and 18 meters to the basin. The port is well ready to handle more than 15 meter draft vessels, say sources, on the lines of laden cape size vessels and also the panamax fully laden vessels too.
