AAI constitutes 12-member Airport Users’ Consultative Committee for Chennai airport
An Airport Users’ Consultative Committee has been set up by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for Chennai airport. The 12-member committee constituted will chiefly voice its opinions on Chennai Airport projects which involve an investment of Rs 50 crore or more.
Unidentified sources close to the AAI have revealed that all the development projects at the Chennai Airport will be discussed by the newly-constituted committee with user agencies as well as stakeholders. The development projects which will be discussed by the committee will include the much-prolonged privatisation of the airport.
The new committee has been set up by the AAI on the basis of instructions from the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA). The 12 members of the committee have been drawn from the hospitality and travel industries. The members representing the industry include the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
In addition, the committee also has representation from airline operators, Bureau of Immigration, Customs Department, and Air Passengers Association of India (APAI). The only representative from outside Chennai is the Mumbai-based Express Industry Council of India.
With regard to the AAI’s formation of the new committee, APAI President D Sudhakara Reddy said that there was previously a Chennai airport advisory committee that advised senior officials on issues related to airport operations and maintenance. However, as per Reddy, that committee hardly met, despite requests for frequent meetings.
