AAI prepares a blueprint for low-cost airports
State-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) has reportedly readied a plan for low-cost airports. The blueprint prepared by the AAI essentially hints at low-cost or ‘no-frills’ terminals which will pave the way for building airports across India; thus improving connectivity.
The disclosure about the AAI’s blueprint for low-cost airports came at an industry-government interface in New Delhi on Wednesday. The event was organized by Economic Times – together with the American Chamber of Commerce – and it was Aviation Secretary and energy conservationist Ashok Lavasa who revealed that the low-cost airport plan has been readied by AAI.
Lauding the AAI’s low-cost airport plan, Lavasa said that the airports built during the last few years have a “rather ambitious” design; and added that there is immense scope for reducing the cost of construction of airports and for conservation of energy.
Revealing that a roadmap for building ‘no-frills’ airports has been prepared by the AAI, Lavasa said that such airports will help the government authorities in achieving the objective of bringing about an improvement in regional connectivity.
Pointing out that “India has as many as 464 airstrips, out of which less than 25% are controlled by AAI”, but not all are operational, Lavasa said: “No frills and energy efficient airports will help us lower the cost of infrastructure. This way, we can optimally utilize our existing infrastructure.”
