AERA increase Bangalore airport tariff by over 100%; IATA opposes the hike

An “over 100 per cent” hike in airport tariff has been fixed by airport tariff regulator AERA – the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority – for the Kempegowda airport in Bangalore.

As a result of the hike, Rs 1,368 and Rs 342 per international and domestic passenger have been fixed by the AERA as user development fee (UDF) and other tariff for the Bangalore airport.

In addition, AERA has also fixed charges for aircraft landing, parking, housing and other charges from July 1, 2014 till March 31, 2015; as well as higher tariff rates from April 1, 2015 till March 31, 2016.

The ‘more than 100 percent’ increase in tariff for the Kempegowda airport has been opposed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In a statement protesting the move by AERA, Conrad Clifford – IATA’s Regional Vice President (Asia Pacific) – said that the tariff hike underscores “a double whammy to Indian aviation.” Clifford further elaborated that the hike will lead to a step 145 percent increase landing charges for international airlines operating to Bangalore, and a 105 percent increase in parking charges.

Pointing out that the Indian aviation industry is already quite “fragile,” Clifford said that AERA’s “deviation in policy can increase costs for airlines and passengers, thus negatively impacting traffic.”
