Affordable housing project in Kochi

Due to insufficient fund allotments, the EMS housing projects in Kochi are having a hard time. Because of the fund scarcity, thousands of homeless families, who are currently staying in makeshift sheds, are unable to complete their house construction before the monsoon.

The EMS or affordable housing projects are aiming to provide houses to all the homeless people, was launched in local bodies across the state in 2008.

The municipality had allotted Rs 75000 to each BPL homeless people. But it is not possible for them to construct a home with that amount as the cost of the construction materials have increased.

The municipality has paid Rs 55000 to start the construction and the balance amount will be paid only after the completion of the construction. Most of the people were unable to complete the construction with the allotted amount.

The panchayats will demand the state to take steps for helping those homeless families who were not able to complete the construction of their house owing to financial constraints.
