The Ahmedabad Metro Rail project which proposes to inter-connect different areas of the city is an ambitious Rs 10,600-crore project, which is yet to take off even though an amount of Rs 565 crore has already been spent on it.

The Rs 565-crore expenditure has been undertaken on the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project over the last two years – till May 2014 – for carrying out various surveys for the project. Moreover, several consultants were also engaged for different works related to the project.

With a Congress MLA from Khedbrahma posing a question to the Government about the delays in launching the Metro project, Gujarat’s Urban Development Minister said in a written reply in the State Assembly on Tuesday that, last year, a new management of Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) – a special-purpose vehicle to implement the project – was appointed by the Government.

Noting that the Metro Rail routes have also been changed, and a new Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared and sent to the Union Government for the requisite go-ahead with the project, the Minister said in the written reply that MEGA officials are hopeful of the commencement of construction work on the project in September or October this year.

In addition, the Minister also stated: “The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2018 and the entire project is slated to be completed by 2022.”
