AIIMS to become the largest super speciality hospital in India: DDA Proposal
Six years ago, there was a plan to transfer the nearly 20-acre land lying vacant behind Jaya Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre to AIIMS which will help in expanding its bed capacity from 2,000 to 4,100. However this proposal was not a top priority for the UPA government and hence was not implemented. Venkaiah Naidu after taking the charge of urban development ministry has asked the Senior DDA officials to restructure the DDA expansion plans and present it before the ministry.
A senior DDA official stated that they were interested in creating a super-specialty hospital compound if the land was transferred to AIIMS. Earlier they had discussed the proposal with the AIIMS management to include the Safdarjung Hospital too in this campus. That would have made the whole compound one of the biggest in India, comparable to some of the biggest hospitals in America.
DDA officials are all hoping that this change of guard in the Union urban development ministry will bring some relief to the appalling healthcare situations in our country which does require an immediate attention.
