All Construction Work stopped in Sahberi and Process of returning Land to Farmers began

Builders, who were allotted land by the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), have stopped all construction work in Sahberi and the Authority officials pulled down whatever hoardings, property advertisements etc remained there. The authority has begun the process of returning land to farmers.

Developers affected by the Sahberi order have also been given the option of seeking a refund from the Authority. However, sources said, builders have been asked to consider the option of “not taking money and adjusting their previous installments against it”.

“As per the Supreme Court order, we must return the Sahberi land to its original owners, but all these villages in the Noida Extension-Greater Noida area do not have clear physical boundaries separating them. Also, in the order, the court had commented against unauthorized construction and encroachment rampant in these villages. So, we need to check for encroachments and bring them down before beginning the process of re-registering the land,” said Rama Raman, CEO of GNIDA.

The Authority has started the paper work and will begin re-registering the land (with farmers) later next week. “As we have to measure each plot as per khasra number, and inquire about and verify from farmers if the piece of land belonged to them, the task may take a week. Our officials will go to the village and check the documents of the farmers. After verifying, the team will reregister the land in the names of farmers,” Raman said.

Meanwhile, villagers who have already claimed compensation have been given the option of “readjusting” the amount with the Authority. “About 15% farmers in Sahberi had taken compensation. We are not forcing them to return the money. The money can be adjusted when the land is acquired again,” a senior Authority official said. The 15% villagers who accepted compensation together received around Rs 17 crore from the Authority, officials said.
