The urban development department of Nagpur has proposed to reserve 20 percent of private apartments for the low cost affordable housing program.

The builders of the city have opposed the proposal saying that it is government’s responsibility to provide affordable accommodation for the economic weaker section (EWS) of the state.

The builders also said that the government has sufficient land laying idle, which can be utilized for the construction of the affordable housing for the lower income group people.

In the proposal the government  has said that, any residential project in Nagpur coming up in an area of 2000 sq. mtr. or more must reserve 20 percent of the construction area for the affordable housing segment.

To implement new proposal, the state government also amended the development control regulations (DCR) for municipal corporations and Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act.

The MHADA planned to buy those affordable apartments at the cost of construction. However if MHADA declines to purchase the tenements within three months, the builder could sell them in the open market.
