Apartments in Chennai have high tension power cables reachable from top
Low-lying high tension (HT) power cables can be touched from roof tops of various apartments in Chennai.
According to norms, all overhead cables should be replaced with underground ones wherever possible. But in many areas like Cantonment Pallavaram, Pammal, Anakaputhur and Nagelkeni in Chennai, the HT power lines can be seen on the top of the apartments.
According to an official from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), these high tension power supply lines were set up many decades ago before residential colonies came up. And relocation of these posts along with wires is not only time consuming but will costs more.
However the civic body of Anakaputhur and Pammal municipalities wants them to be replaced at any cost as human lives are more important than anything.
An estimated 10,000 residents are affected by these low-lying electric wires.
As the electric wires cross above the ground floor of several houses, owners are unable to construct additional floors in their apartments.
