Assam Budget 2013-14 proposes metro in Guwahati

budgetGuwahati- Assam Chief Minister has announced the state’s budget 2013-14 which includes the proposal of Metro rail project for Guwahati. The estimated cost of the Metro rail project would be around Rs 1,800 crore.

The budget includes projects for the improvement of infrastructure and other civic amenities and widening and upgrading of state highways. The proposed projects in Assam will be funded by Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority (AIFA) according to the reports prepared by concerned department.

Barak Valley project would be allotted an amount of Rs 1,000 crore. The Planning and Development Department has been given the responsibility to prepare the project plan within three months.

A six-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra from Narengi to Kuruwa with road link to Dumuni chowki has also been proposed (Rs 1,600 crore). Government buildings like schools, offices, staff quarters, hospitals and other institutions will be renovated. College and high school buildings over 50 years old will also be renovated. It also announced fund for sewerage project in Guwahati city (Rs 1,400 crore).

Other proposals of budget include strengthening of the embankments over 30 years old (Rs 600 crore), beautification of Dighalipukhuri as a tourist spot, beautification of the Brahmaputra riverfront in Guwahati and other towns (Rs 300 crore), reclamation of Silsako beel, Brahmaputra, major tributaries and other water bodies in and around Guwahati city, protection and conservation of Deepor beel and restoration of Bharalu river.

Few other proposals in the line are- setting up of at least 30 cold storages (Rs 150 crore), upgradation of the power infrastructure, creation of developed land banks for setting up of industries and tourism facilities, establishment of mini Assam tourism project (Rs 60 crore), wireless connectivity to all towns and villages (Rs 295 crore) and introduction of GPS-based tracking of passenger buses and school buses (Rs 105 crore).
