Assam residents will soon be able to check their Property Tax online
Residents of cities and towns across Assam will be able to use their mobile phones to check their property taxes from next year onwards.
Assam’s urban development department has decided to launch an e-governance project, under which the property tax collection system will be streamlined to bring in more transparency.
The programme will include 89 urban local bodies, including municipalities and town committees. Officials stated that the aim is that by 2013, a consumer living in any town will be able to check their property tax through their mobile phones.
The move is significant as some of the state’s urban local bodies have managed to collect only 30 per cent of their total property taxes, which has been a big blow to the revenue earnings of government bodies.
