Banerji Road widening to start from Monday
Kochi- The widening of Banerji road will start from Monday by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) as a part of the next phase of preparatory works for Kochi Metro.
The work on the project has already been started and the contractors have started mobilizing resources required for the work. As per metro officials, the road will be barricaded starting from St Antony’s Higher Secondary School at Kacheripady junction.
The stretches to be widened are the roads between the North railway overbridge (ROB) and Madhava Pharmacy. They will be widened on both the sides with the viaduct of Metro passing through the middle. The widening process will be managed by a group of contractors and will cost about Rs 9 crore.
The contract which was declared two years ago was delayed due to land acquisition. An official from Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) stated that the compound wall and the water tank from the school will be demolished to widen the road. However, when asked, the school authorities stated that they are yet to be compensated for their land handed over to the Metro authorities.
They are expecting to get an exemption from remitting the tax deducted at source (TDS). They insist that the district collector takes immediate measures to compensate us for the given land. They also said that they will rebuild the wall and other structures which will be demolished.
According to KMRL sources, the widening works which are a part of preparatory works will have the decision of the district collector for the reconstruction of the demolished structures.
Earlier, the Metro authorities had stated that the compound wall, the kitchen and rain water harvesting plant of the Government Girl’s Higher Secondary School on Chittoor Road will be demolished for Metro construction. When asked about the progress of the preparatory work the DMRC stated that they have begun piling work for the reconstruction of the motor bay of the North ROB.
Further they commented that they will install the girders of Salim Rajan ROB this month. The development of the project will eventually cause traffic diversion starting from this week for the road widening on Banerji Road, between Madhava Pharmacy and North ROB. The vehicles will be directed towards other roads with most of the roads becoming one way.
