Bangaloreans get miserly in terms of property tax payment
Bangalore- According to a report, about 3.5 lakh property tax defaulters in the city owe more than Rs. 786 crore to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
If paid, the property tax arrears will reach up to Rs. 1,000 crore followed by the BBMP levying 2 percent penalty every month. Each ward had a property tax arrear of Rs. 5 crore.
However, the property verification has not been taken up for several years which has resulted in huge differences as most of the owners of properties in Bangalore have suppressed the data about the built-up area.
The officials have been given a deadline to collect the tax amount by the end of March and when verified, about 6,370 properties having a built-up area of more than 10,000 sq ft were having a discrepancies of Rs. 200 crore.
Just like other cities, Bangalore corporation also resorted to drum beating in front of the defaulters residences which actually worked. The residents were ashamed enough and coughed up a pert of their dues. The BBMP had further decided to seize the movable properties for tax defaulters with the officials making a list of all the defaulters which will be apparently shared with the Councillors.
The BBMP officials stated that they will display this list in the ward offices, clubs, prominent places and parks. One such example is about a tech park, which had declared its built-up area incorrectly and owed BBMP a sum of Rs. 60 crore as property tax including the penalty. After the BBMP resorted to drum beating, they coughed up Rs. 6 crore. This was the same case with another five-star hotel who carried arrears of Rs. 87 lakh. Owing to such defaulters the civil, the garbage, electrical contractors and the horticulture had not been paid for about four months.
