BBMP-hired new contractors fail to take up work on proposed date
Bangalore- The new contractors hired by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) were initiated to start the work from December 1. But the contractors have failed to keep up their word.
According to BBMP sources the new contractors had geared up to start three packages in south zone, three packages in Rajarajeshwari Nagar zone and four in Yelahanka zone.
The contractor was expected to begin work in five packages coming under the Yelahanka zone. But owing to inadequate manpower and machinery, the work could not get started. Consequently, the BBMP’s zonal Additional Commissioner issued show-cause notice to the contractor.
The contractor was supposed to have 888 pourakarmikas, 717 pushcarts and 91 auto-tippers, while they had only 220 pourakarmikas, 23 auto-tippers and 20 pushcarts. The new contractors claimed that the old contractors have paid the pourakarmikas they had employed to delay the work so that BBMP would cancel the agreement and re-tender the particular package, said sources.
BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel alleged that it was very important for the new contractors to prove that they have the requisite men and machinery before taking up the work.
The council had approved the new garbage tenders worth Rs 306 crore in October, while it is presently spending Rs 352 crore on the 89 packages with the old contractors. If the new contractors begin the work, the civic body would save Rs 46 crore. 80 of the 89 packages that were proposed were approved, of which, 64 packages were bagged by B.V.G. India Pvt. Ltd.
