After two years of work, the BBMP is finally hopeful of completing its first GIS-based property database in another three months. The Palike plans to ask the electricity board to share its database of household meters to cross-verify property details recorded in its property tax database that is currently being updated on the Geo Information System (GIS).
According to source, 14 lakh properties have been mapped and identified through GIS. Field verification and validation of these properties are being done now. With shared data from Bescom, BBMP hopes to quicken the process. “There should be no further delay. We have formed ward-wise teams for the updation. There will be no shortcuts. This GIS database will be an accurate record of all properties in the city,” said BBMP deputy commissioner (revenue) D L Chandrashekar.
“We will consult Bescom. Sharing of database will help in tracking and verifying the exact address of property owners,” said BBMP special commissioner (project, resource and finance) K R Niranjan. Notices to tax evaders and a ‘simultaneous’ 10% random scrutiny of all returns filed for the three block periods is now the Palike’s top priority. “We are planning some regulatory measures. Our main focus is to bring all properties under the tax net. Simultaneously, we will initiate the random scrutiny process,” Niranjan said. More than three lakh notices were issued in December 2009. Following this, nearly 50,000 have paid tax.
