BBMP pourakarmikas protest against lay offs
Bangalore- The pourakarmikas of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has staged a protest, against their job lay offs, which hit garbage collection in many areas of the city.
There are chances that over 8,000 pourakarmikas may be losing their jobs as there are new garbage contracts coming in before the New Year.
Opposing their suspected lay offs, over 700 pourakarmikas affiliated to the BBMP Contract Pourakarmikas’ Association abstained from work and held a protest in front of the BBMP headquarters. The workers submitted a memorandum to Mayor Venkatesh Murthy requesting him to ensure they would continue to work with BBMP.
Muniraju N, president of the association, spoke about the concerns of pourakarmikas. Including provident fund and insurance benefits, each pourakarmika is paid Rs 6,936 per month. And if his/her job is suddenly taken away, then it will put him/her into serious trouble, he alleged.
However, even the BBMP officials confirmed that hundreds of pourakarmikas may lose their jobs, since the new contractors do not require a big workforce.
Due to the strike, the garbage collection in Vijayanagar, Bapujinagar, Katriguppe, Sampangiram Nagar, K P Agrahara and surrounding areas was messed up.
BBMP has proposed double shifts for workers so that the city be swept twice- from 6 am to 11.30 am in the morning and 1.20 pm to 3 pm at noon. Opposing two shifts of work, the Karnataka State Pourakarmikas’ Association, has organised a huge rally.
