BBMP to be trifurcated, notification soon

No Comments Sub Category:Bangalore,Cities,Civic Issues,Municipality Posted On: Mar 19, 2015

Soon, BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) is to be divided into three separate civic bodies. If everything goes well, then the process would be set into motion next month.

Recently in a high-profile meeting, the Karnataka Cabinet decided to split BBMP into three clones. Their jurisdiction would also be fixed once the nitty-gritties are completed. The Urban Development Department has said that the decision will ultimately be beneficial in the long run. Officials say, apart from alleged inefficiency, there are several complaints against BBMP for financial irregularities. Henceforth, the three new civic bodies will be working independently and in a more professional manner.

The decision to trifurcate BBMP means that three new urban bodies will come up on east, west and central zones of Bangalore. As the population in the Silicon Valley of India has been growing tremendously, the task of providing civic amenities in 198 wards by BBMP alone becomes a herculean hurdle!

As per sources, the government will issue a preliminary notification to garner public views before taking a final call. This is mandatory under Section 4 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act. People may respond within 30 days from the date of notification.

HD Kumaraswamy, former CM of Karnataka, has expressed anguish in this regard. He says, “It will increase administrative expenses. Instead of solving problems, the decision might prove to be counter-productive.”

Some experts believe that like Akrama-Sakrama, the implementation of this decision might get entangled in a legal imbroglio as well.
