BEE plans an energy efficiency movement in the country
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is planning a “voluntary labelling programme” for residential projects in the country. This will be done in order to encourage construction of more “energy-efficient” buildings.
Bhaskar Sarma, while speaking on the side-lines of a national workshop hosted by Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) for the State Designated Agencies in Ahmedabad on Wednesday talked about the blueprint of this project. Sarma mentioned that his team will be suggesting the introduction of a voluntary labelling programme to the states very soon.
Sarma also mentioned that in the next 3-4 months, the country will see a fairly visible energy efficiency movement that will target households. This is a very good news for an over populated nation like ours as power shortage has been a constant problem. Not only the rural areas, but the urban areas too suffer a lot due to the power shortage. The industries suffer as their costs go up when they have to run their manufacturing or services units using power backups.
Sarma added that the residential buildings needed to be brought into the “energy-conservation ambit”. There is a high quantum of power used by the consumers in this segment and this step is necessary to curb the power woes in the nation.
BEE has already developed a Star-rating rating programme for commercial buildings. This is based on the actual performance of a building in terms of its specific energy usage in Kwh/square metre/year.
