Bids invited for feasibility study of 40-km Chennai-Chengalpattu elevated corridor

No Comments Sub Category:Realty News Posted On: Aug 28, 2014

The construction of a 40-km elevated corridor is being considered by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. The corridor has been planned from Chennai to Chengalpattu along the GST Road.

Specifically speaking, the 40-km stretch of the elevated road will be constructed along the Chennai Airport on the city’s outskirts to the toll plaza near Chengalpattu — a highway stretch which marks the gateway to Tamil Nadu.

For carrying out a feasibility study for the elevated corridor, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority has asked consultants to submit bids.

With regard to the reason behind the construction of the proposed Chennai-Chengalpattu elevated corridor, the bid document has noted that the highway stretch has been witnessing a nearly 14 percent annual growth in traffic volumes.

At present, the Chennai-Chengalpattu highway stretch has only four lanes to cope with the heavy local vehicular traffic from villages situated on both the sides of the road. Traffic gridlocks are frequent occurrences on the highway because of the fact that the median opens in as many as 20 locations; and there are nine sub-urban railway stations along the road, resulting in criss-crossing of pedestrians.

The average journey speed of the Chennai-Chengalpattu highway stretch is barely 24 kmph, which is far below the standard of a National Highway.
