Blueprints for the 100 smart cities to be finalised soon
Gone are the days when we used to depend on human beings and manual interference for everything. With the advent of technology, many things have been eased and E- governance (electronic governance) is also one of them. This reduces manual labour, optimises cost and enhances transparency in any work.
Technology-based efficient governance, better mobility and energy conservation will be among the parameters of the Modi Government’s ambitious ‘100 smart cities’ project. The ‘smart city’ idea is in an incubation stage at present and the government is yet to finalise all the norms and terms and conditions before launching them.
It has to be seen whether smart cities will mean free Wi-Fior whether they will incorporate mobility projects including navigation of traffic signal control systems.
The Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had mentioned in his budget speech that the cities will be developed as satellite towns of larger cities and by modernising the existing mid-sized cities. The government has allocated ₹7,060 crore in this fiscal for this.
According to a recent UN report, Delhi has now become the world’s second most populous city with 2.5 crore population and it is expected that by 2030, it will rise to 3.6 crore. Now naturally this will increase traffic woes, water problems, infrastructure problems, sanitation problems to name a few. If the burden from the metros is not removed, then they will collapse and the country will not be able to progress.
However if jobs are created in the smart cities, then the people will stop flogging the existing metros and there will be a harmonious growth in the nation. The present rural urban divide is very strong and they seem to be two different worlds altogether.
