BMCThe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) representatives have strongly expressed their dislike to take the contribution of special planning body in materializing the proposed and ongoing metro and mono rail projects. The MMRDA proposed plan was rejected strongly in the Chief Minister chaired authority meeting.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority conducted a meeting along with the chief minister to discuss about the solutions to speed up the metro rail corridors and for smoother handling of other metro projects. The projects are getting delayed due to several reasons and the point was bought into the notice. Immediate action could have taken by administering a special planning body but, BMC strongly opposed to do so.

The authority consists of BMC members like Yashodhar Phanse, standing committee member, Mayor Snehal Ambekar, Municipal Commissioner Sitaram Kunte and Corporator Dilip Patel. Everyone in the meeting unanimously opposed the proposal disappointing the MMRDA to take crucial step in actualizing the plan.

A Shiv Sena corporator, Phanse stated, “I was against the proposal and Municipal Commissioner has agreed with my decision. The MMRDA suggests us to agree with them to nominate a special planning commission because they don’t want to take permission from us for implementation of few projects related to metro and monorail. After all we are Mumbai’s planning authority and we take care of sewerage, water and storm water drain and many more. By ignoring to take our permission BMC is indirectly behaving like CEO of Mumbai.”

Previous month, the MMRDA sent a letter to the state government, requesting for a clarification over the existing Metrorail and the monorail corridor and the proposed Metrorail lines. The request was mentioned to local construction body and the question was to ask about the jurisdiction. After getting the clarity that whose is the jurisdiction the thought was to implement planning committee to speed up the process. The decision is still untaken about the future progress of Metro and Monorails.

A BMC Corporator, Dilip Patel conveyed that the proposal of the MMRDA was probably correct in their view, however if the special planning committee has to be elected then it should be only BMC. The acceptance has been received from the urban development secretary too. Dilip Patel also stated that whatever may be their decision, the final decision is made by the chief minister.
