BMC plans to acquire private wells
Faced with the grave issue of water shortage in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to acquire all privately-owned wells in the city to alleviate the troubles of the citizens.
Currently there are 784 private wells in the city and the BMC is to solicit the Collector’s assistance in acquiring them. While the civic body has control of only half the wells, the private wells built years ago, could be source of water supply in these troubled times.
The argument forwarded in favour of the move is that only the structure of the well is privately owned, not the water. The water cut has already inconvenienced especially residents of old buildings who live on higher floors as the drop in water pressure has led to a severe shortage.
Apart from acquiring the private wells, the BMC plans to take up measures to promote public awareness on water conservation through television, radio, and putting up advertisements on BEST buses and railway stations.
