BMC refutes claims of rising number of sensitive diseases in the city

Refuting claims made by Praja Foundation, a voluntary organization that focuses on urban and civic issues, that cases of malaria and other sensitive diseases are on the rise in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stated that malaria cases in the city have dropped drastically.

The BMC has disclosed that the numbers of dengue and typhoid cases too are inconsistent with claims made by the organization.

The BMC officials opined that the organization’s sample base needs to be verified as its size of 15,000 households barely represents Mumbai’s population.

In response, Nitai Mehta, founder trustee of Praja Foundation, has reiterated that the state of health in the city is deteriorating and that nearly 75 per cent of Mumbaikars avoid going to municipal health centers or state hospitals.
The civic body however conceded that there are instances of swine flu coming up in the city and to tackle malaria, BMC’s “Fight the Bite” anti-Malaria campaign will begin very soon.
