BMC Stop-work Notices To Errant Builders
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as many as half-a-dozen of errant builders have been served stop-work notices over the past week as a part of BMC’s anti-malaria drive. The notices were issued by the building proposal department of the BMC. The department officials said the developers could have to cough up a penalty of up to Rs 5 lakh if they failed to take corrective measures soon enough.
Fed up with asking builders time and again to take up anti-malaria measures at their construction sites, six errant builders were served stop-work notices. As part of its drive to tackle the malaria menace, the corporation had identified 321 sites where work was not up to the mark. Of these, 303 undertook corrective measures , including 257 which carried out regular health check-ups for their workers.
“Overall , the steps taken by both private developers and properties owned by other state government agencies have been satisfactory . Eighty per cent of them have already complied with our directives. We have given them another 10 days to implement the remaining measures,” said municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar.
The BMC had last month sounded a warning to 2,400 under-construction sites and 33 state buildings, which had become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The government agencies have a total of 137 poorly maintained structures in Wadala , Antop Hill, Parel , Byculla and King’s Circle . The BMC had asked the Central Public Works Department (CPWD ), the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) and the PWD to raze some of their buildings not in use.
So far, five buildings have been demolished . Under pressure , some builders cleaned up their mess in many areas , installing pumps to de-water the sites and pits filled with water . Some took measures such as fogging and appointing pest control officers.
