BMC takes up initiative to curb water contamination
Following 5,419 complaints in June regarding contaminated water, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) water department has been instructed to take at least 1,000 water samples every day.
The Corporation has instructed the water department to look into the reasons of the contamination and also to find measures to plug the problem. The usual process is that the samples are collected after officials receive complaints from citizens. Now the department plans to take random water samples, covering most of the areas in the city and the suburbs. The objective is to check waterborne diseases.
The highest number of complaints has been coming from the D Ward (Girgaum, Nana Chowk, Tardeo, Peddar Road, Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar and Haji Ali). The department has made plans to upgrade its laboratory in D Ward and budget allocation for the up gradation has been made in the current year.
Since it would be impossible to accomplish the task with the number of employees in BMC at present, they have decided to outsource the job to a private company, while the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) will look after the technical expertise.
