BMC to use helium method to detect pipeline leaks

Comments(2) Sub Category:Mumbai,Municipality Posted On: Oct 08, 2012

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) seems to have found an answer to detect pipeline leaks.

BMC’s water supply department has been using this method to detect leakages in the supply lines in the C ward (Marine Lines) of the island city and the T ward (Mulund) in the suburbs. Now the civic body has decided to expand its pilot project of using helium to detect leaks in water pipelines to the rest of the city.

BMC officials state that pipeline leakages are the main reason for water contamination. Earlier, the civic body had been using the ultrasound method to detect leaks. Helium method is claimed to be better than its predecessor by the authorities. In the helium method, the water supply pipes are pressurised with helium and leaks are identified by measuring its concentration.
