BMRC Phase III coming soon in the city
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) has started talking about the city needing a Phase III of this mass rapid transit project. For the present population and city spread, Bangalore needs at least 250 kms of metro lines.
A BMRC official said that plans for Phase 3 are ready and they are waiting for the state government’s privilege to announce it. It is waiting for GOI approval for phase 2.
Phase I which is under construction covers 42.3 kms, Phase II is about 72 kms which is waiting for the final clearance from the centre which leaves at least 135km of additional track to be laid to knit the city into a connected metropolis.
BMRC officials said that vast stretches of the city like Koramangala, Marathahalli, Sarjapur, HRBR Layout, Hebbal and Magadi Road need to be brought within the Metro’s coverage.
According to the BMRC director, Phase III should connect areas on the ring routes and connect outlying regions with the central business district, commercial hubs and prime work places.
Phase I is almost done and it will be functional by 2014. Phase II is waiting for the formal clearance and Phase III is still in proposed stage. After the state government gives the nod for Phase III, BMRC will start with the detailed project report which will take 18 months to get completed. The state government will announce Phase III after the central government clears Phase II for implementation.
