Builders delaying deliveries of home dwellings give rise to consumer activism
On Sunday morning, Sector 33 in Gurgaon witnessed a unique situation. About 150 people who have bought apartments in Unitech Residences project at Sector 33 in Gurgaon turned up at the site with shovels, chisels and other masonry tools, to construct their unfinished apartment towers themselves.
Vikram Bishnoi the president of the Unitech Residences Apartments Buyers Association stated that the builder has been telling them that they are facing labour issues because of which they are unable to finish the project. Hence the home buyers decided to help by contributing as labourers.
The apartments were to be handed over to the buyers in 2011. Bishnoi himself is a telecom professional who bought a three bedroom flat in the project in 2010. He has to shell out Rs 40,000 a month as rent for where he stays apart from the EMI burden.
This unique protest by these homebuyers is one of the several such examples of consumer activism against builders across the country. There are thousands of residential projects reporting inordinate delays in completion, forcing several homebuyers to pay hefty loan instalments and rents at the same time.
There have been similar protests against DLF, HDIL, Supertech and 3C among other builders in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata and the NCR. This situation has resulted in home buyers professing to buy ready to move in homes as they do not have to pay the EMI and rent at the same time.
