Building collapse in New Delhi: Three civic officials suspended; illegal structures risky
Close on the heels of a building collapse in New Delhi’s Sadar bazaar area on Sunday afternoon, the suspension of three civic officials was ordered by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, who also announced a compensation package for the deceased and the injured. Two people have lost their lives and 11 were injured in the building collapse.
In compliance with the Lieutenant Governor’s orders, Revenue Commissioner Dharampal said that the official who have been suspended “for negligence” include the executive engineer, assistant engineer and junior engineer of the zone.
Dharampal farther added that a compensation amount of Rs 2 lakh will be given to the families of the deceased; while the injured will be given a compensation of Rs 50,000.
Meanwhile, in the opinion of the residents of the Sadar Bazaar locality, incidents such as the recent building collapse are apparently looming all the time because the houses in the area are perilously poised.
Without expressing much surprise at the building collapse, in the locality’s residents said that most of the houses in the area have illegal structures similar to the one – House number 4003 – which collapsed on Sunday.
Initial investigation into the building-collapse incident has revealed that the house which collapse on Sunday was being constructed without the permission of civic authorities. Moreover, the quality of construction materials used on the second floor of the house was quite poor.
