Commuter Rail SystemCommuter Rail System (CRS) for Bangalore has got green signal from the state government. The project will benefit denizens in six districts surrounding the city, namely, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Tumkur, Mandya, Ramnagar and Bangalore Rural, by providing quicker connectivity.

A senior government official said that the authorities have asked all the respective departments to prepare detailed project reports for all the proposed routes as mentioned on the report submitted by the Rail India Technical and Economic Services to the government.

In the first phase, the government will start the Commuter Rail System between Bangalore-Tumkur, Bangalore-Mandya and Bangalore-Bangarpet. CRS for other proposed routes Bangalore-Chikkaballapur, Bangalore-Doddaballapur, Bangalore-Hoskote and Bangalore-Nelamangala will be taken up in the later phases.

Another official said that, Rs 500 crore was sanctioned for the project during the regime of former chief minister B.S Yeddyurappa. He added that there is no scarcity of funds. The authorities will have meeting with concerned departments and railway board about the project implementation once the detailed project report (DPR) is done and related reports will be submitted to Central government. For executing the project, the officials are planning to set up a special purpose vehicle which will involve all the stakeholders.

In July 2012, a report on CRS was submitted to the Department of Urban Land Transport (DULT) and the State government by the RITES. The report says that the train will run at a speed of 70 km to 100 km to suburban areas around Bangalore city. CRS promises to give quicker and frequent connectivity to neighbouring and suburban areas, which are fast developing.

The project also plans to reduce the pressure on main hub Bangalore. An urban expert, while preparing feasibility report on CRS, said that Monorail, high-speed rail to BIAL, Namma Metro, rejuvenated BMTC services, etc cannot provide this kind of solution.
