The prevention degradation of the a heritage building Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, the Supreme Court has ordered that the bus terminus should be relocated from Esplanade to preserve the city’s heritage and also to control pollution. The apex court has uphold the decision by Calcutta high court decree to shift the bus terminus from Esplanade. The court has further instructed to ban parking of vehicles around Victoria Memorial. This will save the monument being abased by pollution caused by the traffic.

However the court has not set any deadline as to when the terminus will be shifted. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in October in the year 2002 by green activist Subhas Datta at the Calcutta high court on pollution affecting Victoria Memorial. An expert committee was appointed by the high court comprising of officials from the central and state pollution control boards, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) and other experts to provide a detailed analysis about how vehicular pollution is affecting the monument and suggested measures to stop it.
After referring to NEERI recommendations from chief justices of the Supreme Court of India, RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik had said that the bus terminus should be shifted from Esplanade as a measure to protect and preserve the Victoria Memorial Hall and to funnel the the traffic to go on smoothly in and around the city. After the court order, the state government in 2007 had announced that there will be three new bus terminals around the city – in Howrah, Rajarhat and Bantala. There is also a proposal of a new bus terminus at Santragachhi to de-congest the Howrah bus terminus.
