Campa Cola Residents Keen on Regularising Illegal Structures
The slum capital of Maharashtra, Mumbai has many illegal structures. Not just the slums; even formal housing is plagued by illegality. Many of these residential buildings are built with major deviations from the building code. Several estimates claim that almost one-third of the buildings in Mumbai don’t possess an occupation certificate.
In cases of illegality, it’s typically observed that developers alone are the culprits. The occupants are caught unaware in most instances and feel helpless when the truth comes to light. Campa Cola has been one of the most prominent cases of this in the recent past. It has raised several moral aspects to this, as many people are wrongly facing the sharp edge of the sword while illegalities are regularised.
Now, a new policy is being drafted by a committee comprising municipal commissioners and officials. The problem with this is that the city’s residents – the sole victims – aren’t being involved in this process. It’s not possible for developers to get their way without the help of official machinery.
The residents of Campa Cola have come up with 14 effective conditions, which if agreed upon, would be very useful in reducing the number of illegal structures rising every single day. They also mention how it’s possible to identify and punish the civic officials involved in developing illegal structures.
