CBI initiates preliminary enquiry into Mumbai mill sale

No Comments Sub Category:Realty News Posted On: May 26, 2014

A preliminary enquiry has been initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against unidentified officials of the Textiles Ministry and National Textile Corporation (NTC) with regard to a Mumbai mill sale.

The sale of the erstwhile Madhusudan Mills to a private person – Gowani Builder’s Kamlesh Mehta – has come under the CBI scanner because, as per the information shared by unnamed sources, irregularities have been detected in the transfer of a part of prime land.

Sources claim that the Textiles Ministry as well as NTC officials apparently benefitted from the transfer of land, which resulted in a loss of Rs 1,750 crore to NTC.
Senior CBI officials have revealed that, with the Textiles Ministry and NTC officials apparently conspiring to transfer part of the mill’s land, Mehta was given the permission to develop 27,500sq m of the 80,785sq m plot which belonged to the pre-independence mill.

Confirming the development, CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said that a settlement for the transfer of the mill’s land was seemingly reached because of an alleged conspiring plan executed by NTC officials and the owner.

Prasad said that the officials and the owner worked out an agreement “by giving away 35% of premium portion of land of Madhusudan Mills having a value of Rs 1,750 crore on the ground that it would help NTC convert properties from leasehold to freehold.”
