Cell towers removed from building atops

Illegal cell phone towersFollowing complaints from the residents of the proximity of cell towers to their buildings, the telecom operators in the city have removed 86 cell towers from the top of the buildings.

According to sources, 61 base trans-receiver stations (BTSs) in the city were flouting radiation levels of 450 milli watts per square metre. The civic body has send notices to the cell tower companies seeking corrective action. The action mainly involves bringing down radiation levels or removing towers or repositioning.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) proposed policy, only two towers are allowed on any building, and removal of towers from schools, colleges and hospitals. The residents of Mumbai have registered 400 complaints with DoT regarding cell phone towers, of which 200 have not been check still now. Approximately there are 20,000 cell towers across Mumbai region which includes Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli.

Municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte, told that since EMF was a matter regulated by DoT, BMC should only follow guidelines provided by DoT guidelines while drafting the policy. Kunte found around 1,800 towers which are illegal not because they did not installed the towers with safety norms but they did not receive permission for installation atop buildings.

Cellular Operators’ Association of India delegation told Kunte that the operators have submitted all fees and documents but the BMC had neither accepted nor rejected the applications on time, that is why they were termed as illegal. Soon the BMC will upload names of illegal cell phone tower operators in every wards on their website.
